Ken Rollings

Hello, my name is Ken Rollings and I’m the Libertas candidate for the constituency of North East in the European elections on June 4th later this year. I thought I should tell you a bit about myself to help you make an informed decision in the ballot box.

I’m fighting in this election because I’m really concerned about the hand-over of our national sovereignty to a body that is so distant, opaque and unaccountable to the people it is supposed to serve. But I believe in Europe, passionately. I think it’s time that we – the people – reform and renew Europe ourselves to ensure we still have a say in who governs us in the future. And now, in a time of global financial turmoil, it is more important than ever before.

I was born and bred in Birtley in sight of the Angel of the North well traveled having been an overseas holiday rep, European customer service auditor for a car rental company and finally a railworker where I was very active as a Trade union Safety & Welfare representative. I also attended the union Political school where I learnt about the current erosion of our democratic rights by unelected suits in Europe. I'm currently self employed as a Domestic energy assessor advising people on how they can reduce energy bills

My union work also brought to my attention issues such as the privatisation of what is a profitable and successful business owned by the community Tyne & Wear metro when this is privatised your taxes will still have to subsidise its running only with shareholders taking they profits I'm worried as with all the other privatised nationalised industries cuts in staff and safety budgets will follow. All of this experience has fed into my decision to stand for the European Parliament in 2009.

So what are Libertas’ and my priorities?

Because the economy is in an unprecedented mess, Libertas and I will ensure that EVERY penny spent by Europe demonstrates value-for-money, in order that we can safeguard our countries financial future, and that of our children.

Because I believe that democracy is one of the values that unites ALL Europeans, Libertas will make the EU truly open and accountable like never before. We want to publicise the way decisions are made and who makes them, so that we can make Europe work for us.

Because Europe has been run in secrecy by élites and bureaucrats that are simply unknown to most people, I want to be part of a Europe wide force demanding the people of Europe are consulted and informed of what is being spent and why bringing Europe back to its people.

That is why I ask you to vote for me and the new, pan-European party Libertas on June 4th.

  1. Hi Ken, nice to meet you, glad you're a union man.

You'll be getting my vote on the 4th June 2009, despite the mistakes in your statement.

    I'm sorry, but I'm a pedant, so:
    1) You were born and bred ... in SIGHT of the Angle of the North [fullstop, start next sentence with a capital - Well travelled....]
    2) "...Safety & Welfare representative also..." , I suggest that you make this two sentences (i.e. ... respresentative. I Also...).
    3) "I am" is shortened to I'm and not "Im"
    4) "I want to be part of a europe wide force demanding the people of europe are consulted". Europe is a proper noun, so gets a capital "E".
    5) We, in the UK, vote on the 4th June, not the 7th, as you imply in your last sentence.

Now, I think that is more than enough pedantry from me, I could say more, but...

Like I said at the start, I think I can trust you, so you'll be getting my vote on the 4th (so that's one less for Ms hall).

    Good luck

  2. I certainal cannot vote for Mrs Hall, she published her expenses showing she took an incredible £276,000 on top of her high salary last year. I am ashamed of her and any other politician who rips us off in this way.
What would you do to get rid of expenses completely?

  3. Smart questions, shame Ken's not responded. Great to see a pro European view, willing to engage effectively with the bureaucracy. Ken, if by some miracle you do get elected, do us all a favour and use the opportunity to change more than your interior decor. Good luck!

  4. Okay. I voted for you and your fellow candidates yesterday.

I noted that there was one more candidate on the ballot paper than there is on this website, so we're not being kept up to date, and neither you or Mr McLeod have been answering your blog contacts recently.

Anyway, assuming we didn't take the North East, what now, do you think?
